A 29-year-old man died June 20 from a brain injury suffered while playing softball on June 18 at the Allerton Sports Complex.
T.J. Sommers collided with another softball player and sustained a brain injury, said Kim Rufra, associate director of recreation services. An EMT dispatch was called at 7:08 p.m. that night.
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center rents out the complex on Thursday nights to a church league, Rufra said. Sommers was playing for his church, Bethany Mennonite Church.
Rufra said Kent State is hosting a softball tournament in honor of Sommers. The money raised will help his family with medical and funeral expenses.
Rufra said the tournament will be held August 8 at the Allerton ballfields. For more information, contact Rufra at krufra@kent.edu, or call the SRWC at 330-672-4732.

It's really a pitiful story. Brain injury is very much different from other injuries. The process of treatment is also totally different as the injury is not clearly visible and the period for treatment is much longer than healing any other injuries. (Continued…)
