Eighty-four teams will take part in the eighth annual Relay for Life at Kent State this weekend.

Relay for Life, located at the Liquid Crystal Institute and Small Group Track, will begin tomorrow morning with registration at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. The event will continue until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Rachel Kessler, co-chair of Relay for Life at Kent State, said the opening ceremony is something to witness.

Kessler said the ceremony includes the Kent State pep band, Kent firefighters' color guard and a flyover by the Kent State Precision Flight Team during the playing of the National Anthem. During this time, cancer survivors also complete a lap around the track.

Scheduled events, which can be found on KentNewsNet.com, include performances from local bands Skunk 11 and Ashes as well as the Miss Relay competition, a pageant where male participants dress in drag and try to raise money through crowd donations.

The theme is "Hope Through the Years," where team campsites display a theme year from 1913, the founding year of the American Cancer Society, to present day. The theme is in celebration of Relay for Life's 25th anniversary as being a nationally recognized event.

With 1,422 participants signed up for the event, Kessler said people can still sign up.

"It's not too late to sign up and it's not too late to make a stand against cancer," Kessler said.
