Helga Kaplan thought academic achievements should be recognized, said Becky Gares, coordinator of advising and communication in the Honors College.

In 1981, Kaplan, a former Honors College adviser, organized the first celebration of scholarship and academics.

The Honors Day Convocation "highlighted intellectual activity on campus and recognized academic accomplishments," said Kim Huff, Honors College coordinator of student life and alumni relations.

This year about 30 lectures, award ceremonies, exhibits, recitals and events will be held during Honors Week. It's a way to "make events visible to the university community," Huff said.

Most Honors Week events are open to the public and offer free admission to students.

"It is a culmination of events from various departments on campus," Huff said. "We encourage departments to plan events during that time period."
