Henderson hammers competition at Duke

Track and field throwers finish well in weekend invite

The Kent State track and field finished this weekend with strong performances from the throwers at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.

Senior thrower LeVania Henderson beat the school record for hammer throw, winning the women's event with a toss of 191 feet, 4 inches in Friday's event. Juniors Effua Ampadu and Brittni Borrero finished third and seventh respectively in the event. Ampadu finished with a career-best of 170-9 and Borrero finished with a distance of 157-10.

Henderson also won the women's shot put with a toss of 50-5 1/2 on Saturday. Junior Samantha Fetter finished fourth in the event with a regional qualifying distance of 47-10.

Also on Saturday, Borrero won the women's discus. Her toss of 169-3 is a NCAA Regional qualifying distance and is also the sixth longest throw in Kent State history.

In her first collegiate meet, senior thrower Kim Hamilton won the javelin throw with a regional qualifying distance of 164-11.

In the men's hammer throw, sophomore Matthew Pfleger placed third with a career-best toss of 202-1. Junior Anthony Connor placed fourth in the event. His best toss was a distance of 176-10.

Connor placed second in the men's discus with a distance of 168-3. Pfleger and freshman Drew Ebersole placed sixth and seventh in the event, respectively. Pfleger finished with a distance of 157-7. Ebersole finished with a distance of 156-9. He also placed tenth in the men's shot put with a toss of 47-2 1/4.

Freshman Brian Florek placed fifth in the men's javelin throw with a career-best of 188-4.

The track and field team will travel to Akron this weekend for the Akron Quad meet.
