Sororities and fraternities came together Saturday night to raise money at Delta Zeta's annual Lip Sync event and surpassed the sorority's fundraising goal by more than $2,000.

"We had a goal of $5,000 for this year," said Lindsey Kujawa, philanthropy chair of Delta Zeta.

Delta Zeta raised $7,450 from donations for those who are hearing and speech impaired, as well as children who are terminally ill. Last year, the sorority raised $3,000.

Money raised will support five different organizations: Gallaudet University, Sound Beginnings Program, House Ear Institute, The Starkey Hearing Foundation and The Painted Turtle.

"This year was the biggest we've ever had," Delta Zeta President Courtney Donohoe said. "We had to turn down people at the door."

Eighteen chapters were judged on their lip sync ability, choreography, incorporation of Delta Zeta into their routines and money raised.

Chapters wore Delta Zeta letters along with Delta Zeta's chapter colors, pink and green.

Delta Gamma incorporated Delta Zeta's letters on turtle shells, while Delta Lambda Phi wore green shorts and pink shirts. Lambda Chi Alpha gave all the Delta Zeta seniors red roses.

There was a sorority and fraternity winner in each award category:

• First place sorority: Chi Omega

• First place fraternity: Sigma Nu

• Second place sorority: Delta Gamma

• Second place fraternity: Delta Upsilon

• Third place sorority: Alpha Phi

• Third place fraternity: Tau Kappa Epsilon

Sigma Nu has been the first-place winner three years in a row. There was also a people's choice award that was given to Alpha Phi, and a Delta Zeta Choice Award that went to Delta Upsilon.

"It shows how much the Greek community can do together," Donohoe said. "It was a lot of work for us, but the chapters' enthusiasm made it worthwhile."
