Golf team misses round to rain but don't lose the 'mo'mentum

Golfing three rounds in two days didn't bother Kent State's women's golf team at the Texas A&M "Mo"morial tournament this weekend, but playing on the toughest course they have seen all year did.
The Flashes finished the tournament tied for fourth with Texas A&M. The first round was delayed until Saturday because of soggy course conditions.
"It rained an awful lot on Thursday afternoon and night, the course was too wet to play," coach Mike Morrow said. "There was a lot of standing water on the fairways and sandtraps."
Because of the delayed start, teams golfed two rounds Saturday. Morrow said the team wasn't affected by the change.
"We're in very good physical shape," he said. "The 36 holes we've done a few times this year. It had no impact on us."
Leading the women was senior Tara Delaney with her second top-ten appearance this season. Delaney shot 19-over-par at the tournament to finish in a tie for ninth.
"I kind of wanted to do much better than that," she said, "whether I got in the top ten or not."
As a team, the Flashes recorded a higher score than usual because of what Morrow called "an extremely difficult golf course."
"The greens were pretty spare," he said. "The pin placements were testing. It's a hard place to golf, but it is what it is."
Kent State did not card a single under par round the entire tournament. Delaney recorded the teams lowest round with 4-over-par.
"I think everybody on the team would say that the golf course was really tough, and we all struggled," Delaney said. "I know we can all play much better than we did."
The tricky course affected the entire field as no golfer even finished at par. First place finisher Sara Brown of Michigan State ended the tournament 5-over.
Senior Kira Meixner finished second on the team and 16th overall. She carded two consecutive 7-over-par rounds to end 24-over.
Junior Kirby Dreher shot a 6-over-par to move from 39th to 24th on the last day. She finished 29-over.
Rounding out scoring for Kent State was junior Maddi Swaney at 32-over and freshman Martina Gavier at 36-over.
