Boasting its highest national ranking in program history, the Kent State women's golf team will travel to Bryan, Texas, to tee off this weekend in the "Mo" Morial Tournament.

Currently ranked 12th, the Flashes will compete against other Top 25-ranked teams such as Denver, Texas Christian and tournament host Texas A&M.

"There's a number of quality teams here," coach Mike Morrow said. "Our expectations are to come in here and compete for the top position."

The women's team has not finished worse than fifth in six tournaments this season.

Senior Kira Meixner, ranked 36th nationally according to Golfweek, will lead the Flashes in Texas. Meixner has recorded a top ten finish in each of her last two outings.

Not to be outdone, junior Kirby Dreher and freshman Martina Gavier are also ranked nationally. Dreher is 52nd, while Gavier is 79th.

Morrow said the team's preparation for the tournament has been limited to indoors because of the weather.

"We got outside one time," he said, "but other than that it's been trying to stay in touch with our short game and making contact with the ball."

Along with the 14-team field, the course will test the Flashes' ability.

"The golf course is maybe the hardest course we play on all year," Morrow said. "We're looking forward to the challenge."

The women tee off the first of three rounds this weekend at 8 a.m. today.
