Kent State offers students the opportunity to become security aides on campus.

Applicants have already been chosen for the fall semester, but campus security manager Brian Hellwig said he may hire again in September.

Hellwig said he looks for motivated students who have developed good social skills and are willing to work the shifts needed.

Security aide pay starts at $7.25 an hour.

Student security aides patrol residence halls between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. They also check public areas, escort students and staff and document student policy violations.

About 50 students are needed each semester. Nine to 10 students are needed each summer.

Once students are accepted as security aides, they go through training and can keep their position for a full year.

This program can benefit students looking to become police officers or students studying criminal justice, Hellwig said.

Many former security aides now work at federal agencies such as the FBI, Hellwig said. Many Kent and Kent State police officers have been security aides in the past.

For more information about becoming a security aide, contact Hellwig in Clark Hall.

For students who aren't interested in becoming security aides, Hellwig said they shouldn't be afraid to take advantage of the escort service, Hellwig said.

To provide security for students walking across campus at night, the escort service is provided by student security aides from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. By calling 2-7004 on a campus phone, a security aide will walk with a student across campus to their destination.

"Security aides are to help," Hellwig said. "Students should know that the security aides are not always out to get you."
