Move over Miss America, Kent State residence hall students have taken over the world of beauty pageants.

Last night the Kent Interhall Council hosted its annual King and Queen of KIC where students showed how much talent and grace they really have in a beauty pageant-style competition.

"It's a showcase of ambitious people in the residence halls who are willing to strut their stuff in front of a crowd," said Derek Lenehan, director of programming for KIC.

Hosted by Lenehan, the competition was judged by Cassie McClelland, the vice president of programming and development for KIC, freshman biology major Valarie Swan and senior psychology major Caitlin Faas, who is the previous Queen of KIC.

Contestants were judged in three categories that included their attire, their responses in the question and answer section and their individual talent performance.

While the students may have dressed to impress for the attire portion of the competition and answered trivia questions about Kent State, it was the talent portion that received the most attention.

"I loved it," said Chris Johnson, a sophomore education major who attended to support his roommate. "A lot of talent was expressed that incorporated the students majors."

Students performed various talents including personal art work, an acoustic guitar performance, interpretive dance and even a student who hung a coat on a hanger from his nipple ring.

At the end of the night Mary Seats, freshman fashion design major, and Shaun Zuhosky, junior music education major, were crowned the King and Queen of KIC. They both received a $100 American Express gift card.

"I am speechless," said Zuhosky about wining the competition. "I figured it would be a lot of fun and a good opportunity to get out there and show support for KIC."
