Katie Hale, candidate for Undergraduate Student Senate, spoke about her platform at the KIC open forum in the Governance Chambers last night. Hale, a junior political science and sociology major, is running for executive director of USS.

Smoking marijuana in the residence halls was just one of the topics discussed at the Kent Interhall Council's open student forum last night.

Students from different residence halls on campus were able to ask a variety of questions to representatives of various campus departments.

Question topics included the effects of Ohio's minimum wage increase and security for residence halls to illegal drugs in the residence halls.

"It is really important for the different departments on campus to know student opinions and concerns," said Emily Kloosterman, vice president of leadership development for KIC. "It helps them to meet student needs."

Dining services, parking services and the office for security and compliance were among the departments represented at the forum.

Representatives not only fielded questions but also listened to student suggestions on everything from campus food to improving residence halls.

Tom Dunn, associate director for campus environment and operations, said he found the forum helpful.

"I now have a few things to take back and look at," Dunn said. "The student perspective is very important. It's why we are here."
